No matter what we do on an individual level, there's a lot that has to go take place on many levels to get the world to a better place.

You can go into depth and learn about systems change from this report.

We'll likely never be able to trace our individual or collective impacts on creating systems change, there are many ways you can contribute.

Setting a goal can help make the intangible feel tangible. For example, once I wrote one letter each day for a full year (okay, I didn't quite finish, but I'm sure within my lifetime I'll have written well over 365 letters and signed that many petitions).

Letters

If you live in a part of the world where you are free to express your opinions, this is one of the greatest opportunities where you need no money to get involved.

Government and organizations (public and private) are not so different in that public perception can make or break their existence.

Letters/Petitions/Social Media
If you like what the government/company is doing, send them a letter!  If you aren't happy, send them a letter! Sign a petition! Both! Then tell your friends to do the same!  Call them out on social media!  Let them know if you will/won't be supporting them with your votes, money, or social power based on their decisions.

Demonstrations
Attend peaceful demonstrations if you live in an area where this is safe - and don't forget that social and environmental justice are one and the same, so find out how you can become an ally to marginalized and underrepresented communities.

Elders & Youth

Elders have lived through so much, and can share how the world has changed since they were younger. One interesting thing to note is almost every elder today contributed somehow to systems change - whether it was a woman being the first to enter the business world formally in her family, a new immigrant being the first to go to school, or signing a petition or marching for equal rights, they are living symbols of hope that everyone working together will have an impact, no matter how big or small.

And youth, well, it's worth learning from them. Most change only happens because people are naive enough to try what feels impossible. Youth are often champions of  not letting things get in the way and just giving it a try.
