There's nothing like bringing people together to get things done or just enjoying each others' company! Whether a business, family, or friend gathering, this offering will set you up for a full or multiple day event. If you're keen to learn more, please read on!

What's included in the package?
The water, carbon, and ecological footprint impacts of:
  • Event or gathering space
  • Travel to and from the event (not including air travel)
  • Light refreshments, such as snacks and coffee/tea
  • Miscellaneous items such as a small number of paper printouts, pens, etc.

What's NOT included in the package?
  • Air travel to event - because traveling by air is a major environmental contributor, we offer it as a separate offset option
  • Hotel stays - if people are staying at hotels for your event, this is a separate offset

See more details in our methodology section further below.

What if I can't afford the full footprint offset? Are there other options?
We know our supporters want to decrease impact on the environment, but sometimes it's not financially possible. First, read our spiel on why reducing impacts is preferable to offsetting impacts, and identify ways to reduce your negative impacts.

For whatever you can't reduce, we offer links to our partners’ websites if you are only interested/able to afford offsetting one of your footprints. The websites all have different navigation styles, but we’ve put a lot of time into making sure they’re the right fit and high quality, so enjoy checking them out!

Carbon footprint - Less.ca, use their flight calculator or tonnes calculator
Water footprint - BEF's Water Restoration Certificates®
Land footprint - BioR's land restoration program for ecological footprints

Buyer Beware: There are many offsets out there that sound lovely, and some do support excellent projects, but many of them are not verified by third parties which make sure their offsets are actually making the difference they claim. It's hard not to be enticed by the lower prices, but if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

We can also do personalized assessments of your impact, it may end up being lower than the average calculated in this package. If you're willing to put in a few minutes so we can find a more accurate impact, it may be lower than the price listed. Get in touch!

What can I do to decrease the impact of my event?
  • Selecting the event location – when possible, choose a location accessible by public transit, rail, etc. and in a building that is LEED certified. Also consider if some people can just videoconference into the event instead of traveling.
  • Request food that is local, organic, and lower in animal products (meat and dairy are resource intensive).
  • Request packaging to be minimal – use glasses for water instead of bottled water, for example.
  • Negotiate room blocks with hotels that are within walking distance of the event venue and/or have green policies.
  • Provide public transport passes, shuttles, or carpooling services for to the event
  • Consider less or local “swag” – while sometimes they can be fun and useful, often little things like branded squeeze toys are cheaply made without the environment in mind. If you must have little handouts, consider supporting local artisans using recycled materials, or useful, higher quality items
  • Get event attendees involved – ask what they would like to see and how they can decrease their impacts

Methodology
Location: We consider a large meeting room, and also assign a small portion for shared spaces and commodities such as usage of bathrooms, etc. This includes the electricity, heating, and water of the buildings.

Transportation: We assume that some event attendees drive in from short to medium distances, some take public transit, and some use active forms such as walking or cycling. We find the impacts of the fuel, including the water in processing the fuel, for these events.

Meals: We assume one meal and/or some snacks and light beverages. We assume 15% of these are vegetarian/vegan.

Items: We also assume a small amount of items, such as some paper printouts, etc. are used at or in preparation for the event.

Data: Because our supporters are international, we use a combination of US, European, Canadian, and Australian data sources based on the best available, including from U.S. Energy Information Administration, US Department of Energy, American Water Works Association, and more. Some countries have smaller impacts; but we prefer to err on the side of caution and use larger “western world” data as measures.

You can contact us for a personalized assessment for an event in a different country, or with different specifications, if interested!
